Ultrasound of Major Cerebral Arteries and Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound

Ultrasound (sonography) of the major arteries of the brain and transcranial doppler examination is an examination of the arteries that bring blood from the heart to the brain. Ultrasound is painless, takes approximately 20 minutes and allows us to learn the current state of important vessels in the area of the neck and brain.

The examination is able to distinguish whether atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is present and how severe it is. With a significant narrowing of the carotid artery (stenosis above 70%), there is a high risk of stroke.  In this case an operation of the carotid artery is often necessary to prevent a stroke. A cerebrovascular accident (CVA, stroke) is a serious disease that can cause severe disability or even death.

Typical examples of ultrasound examinations are:

  • Already suffered a stroke (so-called secondary prevention)
  • Risk patient – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, overweight, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise – sedentary jobs, stress in personal and/or work life, heart disease, arrhythmia
  • Vascular diseases that run in the family (stroke, heart attack, etc.)
  • Unexplained transient states of impaired consciousness, dizziness, gait instability, headaches
  • Speech disorders, weakness or tingling of the limbs, drooping of the corner of the mouth

The examination will be performed by a neurologist with practical experience in ultrasound and stroke. At the same time our doctor can perform a clinical examination and preventive or therapeutic recommendations.
